Norwegian language is the national language of Norway. Norwegian (norsk) is a North Germanic language spoken primarily in Norway, by virtually all of the country's 4 million inhabitants. It is also spoken as a second language among Norwegian-Americans in the USA, especially in the central northern states. Together with Swedish and Danish, Norwegian forms a continuum of more or less mutually intelligible local and regional variants.

As established by law and governmental policy, there are two official forms of written Norwegian – Bokmål (literally "book language") and Nynorsk (literally "new Norwegian"). The Norwegian Language Council recommends the terms "Norwegian Bokmål" and "Norwegian Nynorsk" in English.

There is no officially sanctioned standard of spoken Norwegian, and most Norwegians speak their own dialect in all circumstances. At present bokmå1 and nynorsk have equal status both in government and in the schools. Attempts to combine the two into samnorsk ("Common Norwegian") have thus far been unsuccessful, but most forward-looking Norwegians believe that it is only a matter of time before they are eventually merged.

English words of Norwegian origin include fiord, slalom, troll, lemming, auk and narwhal.
